This species is sometimes found in large numbers growing from decaying wood that can be buried (tree roots); thus, it looks like it's growing from the ground. This species was known as Lycoperdon pyriforme and more recently as Apioperdon pyriforme until recent DNA testing showed these do not occur in New Zealand, so presently this has no name.
