Cortinarius gymnocephalus
A rare, small Phlegmacium of Nothofagus forest, recognised by its glutinous grey‑ to yellow‑brown cap with a violet‑tinged margin when young, saturated violet gills, and a pale‑violet viscid stipe often showing faint whitish squamules.
Pileus: 30-50 mm diam., hemispherical when young, later convex. Glutinous, glabrous, not or only weakly hygrophanous near the margin. Colour grey‑brown to yellow‑brown; margin greyish with a violet tinge in young basidiomes. Surface smooth; gelatinous pellicle persistent in moist conditions.
Lamellae: Free, crowded, narrow. Saturated violet when young, sometimes shifting to pale reddish‑violet with a distinctly violet edge. Mature gills retain some violet tones.
Stipe: 30-55 x 8 mm, cylindrical, occasionally with a small piston‑like bulb. Viscid, pale violet, covered with whitish squamules along the entire length. Flesh marbled violet in the upper part.
Veil: White to pale violaceous, rather sparse. Cortina absent.
Context: Greyish‑white to pale tan, marbled violet.
Odour/taste: Odour faintly sweetish; taste faint, somewhat unpleasant.
