This is a large fungus that tends to turn up in urban habitats without any obvious mycorrhizal partners. It is often called Phlebopus portentosus, which is an Australian species not found in New Zealand. It's recognised, besides its large size, by the cap going blue at the top of the stipe when cut in half.
